Description Alongside the relevant terms of this issue, »state«, »space« and »administration«, this contribution shows the intertwined representations of order, their administration and thus the governance of the subjects in the sovereignty areas of Salzburg and Tyrol in the Zillertal. The different ideas of space – investigated from the perspective of various groups of the population, officials and the government centre – changed throughout the examined period. At the beginning the authorities in the government centre endeavored to keep the borders open for a mutual exchange whereas the local officials used their »administration tools« to stage a competition with the officials of the neighbor district by e.g. blocking and redirecting ways. By this, a tendential more open space construcion met a more mistrustful and closing one. In the context of negotiating for an equation between Tyrol and Salzburg in their border regions – carried by the new developed representations of a state with a clearly defined sovereignty area, which can be ruled without any foreign influence up until the borders – also the measures of the rulers and the government centres started to change. Borders got adjusted and a clear assignment of the subjects was demanded. However, the more exact the accordance of space and sovereignty was intended, the more obvious got the impossibility of this undertaking. Seemed-to-be clear defined border lines appeared vague when regarded closely. Their official description collided with the one of the subjects. The »space acting« of the subjects was determined by the sovereign specifications and controlled by the administering work of the officials but the subjects developed their own strategies to deal with inventions in their space constructions and to adjust them.
