Description This text discusses the reflection that triggered an experience of cultural and academic intervention in Tepito, considered one of the most dangerous neighborhoods in Mexico City. This experience created new forms of artistic and religious creations which helped to develop the neighborhood’s own identity as well as challenging dominant aesthetic manifestations and also contributed to resistance against the onslaught of the fierce stigma which exists towards these neighborhoods. The contribution of this experience to the debate on art and popular culture is that it emphasizes the collective creation which occurs in everyday life and how it contributes to and promotes autonomy.This text discusses the reflection that triggered an experience of cultural and academic intervention in Tepito, considered one of the most dangerous neighborhoods in Mexico City. En este texto se aborda la reflexión que detonó de una experiencia de intervención cultural y académica en el barrio de Tepito, uno de los barrios considerados más peligrosos de la Ciudad de México, en esta experiencia se reflexiona sobre las nuevas formas de creación tanto artísticas como religiosas que han contribuido a desarrollar una identidad propia del barrio, que además cuestiona las manifestaciones estéticas dominantes y contribuyen a resistir el embate feroz de la estigmatización a estos barrios. La contribución de esta experiencia con el debate sobre el arte y culturas populares es que pone el acento en la creación colectiva que se dan en la vida cotidiana y como ésta contribuye y promueve la autonomía.
