Description The purpose of this research is to explorethe role of Reyita as a symbol of Cuba in Daisy RubieraCastillo’s testimonial novel "Reyita: The Life of a BlackCuban Woman in the Twentieth Century" (1997) asa literary figure. Although the protagonist undergoesseveral hardships as an Afro-Cuban woman of lowsocioeconomic status, her struggles represent farmore than just herself. They are indicative of the livingconditions in pre-Revolutionary Cuban society andmirror the daily struggles faced by several individuals, and provide insight into what it was like to be anindividual “triply marginalized” by gender, race, andclass. However, these three “setbacks” never stoppedReyita from always serving the greater good. She alwaysput others before herself, as demonstrated from herrelationship with her family. These actions were not justlimited to her family, but could also be expanded to theentire population of Cuba. Such selfless efforts helpedReyita increase her independence, and by the end ofthe book, Reyita’s dependence on her husband becomesalmost nonexistent. The testimony was written by herdaughter, a well-known historian and anthropologist, who brings the validity of the work into question, thoughit also makes us question how much of it is faithful toReyita’s experiences, and how much of it was influencedby her daughter, since Daisy Rubiera experienceddiscrimination for many of the same reasons as Reyita. The theories and perspectives of other Afro-Cubanwriters, such as Maya Anderson, Roberto Zurbano, andErnesto Pérez Castillo, will also be analyzed and discussedto investigate the following question: In what way doesReyita, a female, Afro-Cuban descendant of slaves, represent the entire Cuban nation?
