Description The increasing rate of project failure, cost and time overrunsis raising a wave of public concern in Nigeria. This study wasaimed at comparative evaluation of documentation practicesin private and public projects in Nigeria in order to unravelthe quality of the documentation for infrastructuraldevelopment projects. Ten (10) private and ten (10) publiccapital projects were surveyed. Fifteen (15) documentationquality variables (DQVs) that are key to project actors wereused to measure the documentation implementation levels(DILs) and the index of project success (PSFS). The resultsshowed a general low quality documentation and dismal levelof project success, without any significant difference inachievement between public and private sector projects. Thestudy recommended, among others, proper procurementdocumentation, balanced and collaborative professionaldesign and construction team, which must admit inputs fromwork operatives, and the application of information communications technology (ICT) in construction documentation to generate and manage quality construction databases at all stages.
