Description |
Nigeria has been described in several reports as business-unfriendly. Thebrunt is borne by small and medium enterprises (SMEs) sub-sector, whichshould be the engine room of the national economy. Reports show that inadvanced economies of the West and Asia, poor business environmentleads to labour turnover, which in turn, affects enterprises. Could thisapply to Nigeria? This study investigated staff turnover, factors of staffturnover intentions and effects of staff turnover on SMEs operating inEnugu, Nigeria. The study adopted a multi-stage sampling technique toselect targets that meet the criteria of SMEs from membership of groups oforganized private sector (OPS) in Enugu, and to purposively selectrespondents from staff of selected SMEs. Questionnaire and interviewwere used to elicit information from respondents, with likert-scaledoptions. Average mean score technique was adopted to analyze the dataand to test the null hypotheses. Findings showed that job stress, job stressors, lack of commitment, job dissatisfaction, organisationalinstability, personal agency, a sense of powerlessness, locus of control, personal control, economic reasons and role ambiguity are all factors oflabour turnover intention; management practicies and policies affect staffturnover intention; demographic factors affect staff turnover; andunemployment situation affects staff turnover, which aadversely affectproduction, sales, customer satisfaction and costs of recruitment andtraining in SMEs. These factors ought to be avoided or minimized foroptimum performance of the enterprise.
