This paper aims to analyze the notion of superstition in Voltaire’s work as a means of defending toleration in the framework of restriction of civil rights and harsh persecution of Protestants in Eighteenth century France. First, we present considerations on the political and legal context of France in that century, identifying norms that restricted Protestants rights in an officially Catholic country. We also point concrete cases of trials marked by religious intolerance in which Voltaire took part, showing his role not only in theoretical discussions, but also in practical experience. Finally, we get to the relation between illuminists and the question of fanaticism and superstition, developing some thoughts on this concept in Voltaire’s work, always relating it to the topic of toleration. It’s shown the role that him, such as many of his Enlightenment colleagues, attributed to Reason and Philosophy in the fight against superstition and in enlightening, supporting religious toleration and the quest for the Protestants rights in a France where, historically, the different was rejected.
O presente trabalho visa a analisar a noção de superstição na obra de Voltaire, como uma forma de defesa da tolerância, principalmente no paradigma do cerceamento de direitos civis e de perseguições ferrenhas aos protestantes na França do século XVIII. Inicialmente, são apresentadas considerações sobre o contexto político e jurídico da França no referido século, identificando normas que cerceavam direitos dos protestantes em um país oficialmente católico. São citados também casos concretos de julgamentos marcados pela intolerância religiosa nos quais agiu Voltaire, demonstrando a atuação não apenas em discussões teóricas, mas também em nível prático feita pelo filósofo. A partir daí, chega-se à relação entre os iluministas e a questão do fanatismo e da superstição, desenvolvendo-se considerações sobre esse conceito em Voltaire, sempre relacionando-o ao tema da tolerância. Resta evidenciado o papel que o autor, assim como muitos de seus colegas iluministas, conferia à Razão e à Filosofia no combate à superstição e no esclarecimento, favorecendo a tolerância religiosa e a busca por direitos dos protestantes numa França em que, historicamente, o diferente era rechaçado. |
